SPARC members Dr Fay Hield and Dr Sarah Price have a new paper out in the International Journal of Traditional Arts exploring the experiences of folk music audiences: ‘I realised it was the same song’: Familiarisation, assimilation and making meaning with new folk music.
Fay and Sarah followed a group of listeners over 6 months, documenting their experiences as they got to know Fay Hields’s 2016 album, Old Adam. This paper shows how listeners enjoy making connections between the new songs and other folk music – ‘I realised it was the same song’ – and loved trying to make sense of the detailed stories on the album.
